The terrific thing is they are simple and there is no better family activity to help the kids with boredom like creating their own frozen treats. Nothing can compare with the family bonding time of making them and the joy of watching the anticipation in a young kid's face as they ask every 5 minutes - "Are they ready yet?".
Now, how do you make it so this summertime refreshing treat is speedy and easy?
Making Homemade Popsicles
Easy does it
I am an engineer so I can tell you first hand the right tools make any job easier and the same can be said for making Popsicles . Purchase a few of the many Popsicle molds out there. These are not very expensive and what kid will not enjoy a rainbow rocket pop or a sailboat shaped treat. It is a great way to enhance the fun and clean up is a snap. Of course if you don't have molds the trusty Dixie cup is always an effective substitute.
Rainbow Gatorade Pops
As simple as it gets
Since kids are always running around and need to stay hydrated in the summer the Gatorade Popsicle will accomplish the the task with a dash of fun for the the little ones.
Get several flavors of Gatorade and layer them into the molds. Keep the level of each color at about 2 inches and freeze it thoroughly before adding the next layer. My kids love this one and it is super easy on me with no real mess to clean up.
Quick Backyard Party
Invite the neighbors kids over and celebrate the Popsicle making experience together. Your kids will be proud to display their Popsicle prowess and you will earn the thanks of the neighbor.
Fruit and Yogurt Popsicles
Kids love this one!
I am always trying to find ways to get my kids to eat healthy alternatives. The Fruit and Yogurt Popsicle trick seems to be an easy way to get them to eat fruit and love doing it.
Ingredients
2 cups fresh fruit Mango, blueberries, strawberries and/or bananas (any fruit will do)
2 cups plain yogurt
Place the fruit and yogurt into a blender, cover, and blend until fruit is chunky but pour-able. You really can't mess this up so don't stress if you leave it in too long. The longer you blend the smoother the texture will be.
Fill molds full with fruit mixture. Insert the stick bases and you are done.
5 hours in the freezer and you have fruit pops for every one.
Remember, there is no right or wrong way to make a Popsicle. Add some honey, toss in a twist of lemonade, pour in some sprite. Try it all. Just never forget the most important ingredient - Your smile.
Quick Tip
When using Dixie cups cover each cup with a strip of aluminum foil and poke the sticks through.
